Chapter Seven

As soon as dinner was over, Mercury headed back to her quarters, moving at a pace that had me scrambling to keep up.

“Urgh!” She slammed the door behind us. “That woman!” She flung herself into one of the chairs, sinking in deeply as she hit the broken springs, and kicked off a shoe. It flew past my nose and hit the wall behind me with a bang! “Can you believe the nerve of some people? She acted as if I’d been wasting my time here, that I was too old, and as if I’d had months and months to read the book and get ready for their visit, instead of only a few days.”

The other shoe followed the first, but I was ready for this one and made sure I was well out of the way as it shot into the wall.

“And the other one, what’s his name? Waldo? He’s no better. Looking down his nose at me and making snide comments. As if he’s that special.” She did an eye roll. “And guess what? I caught Gladys and Mrs. H gossiping in the kitchen before dinner and they both said he’s not much of a wizard. They said he only made it onto the Wizard Board because of a family connection. I guess no one wanted to come do the prep work for the actual ceremony, so he was the last choice. Not that Daphne’s anything special either.” The corners of her mouth turned down. “Well, maybe she is. I have no idea.”

She pulled out the sagging sweatpants I recognized as the “pity pants”. The ones she put on to eat ice cream, drink wine, and watch silly rom-coms in bed. It was no big surprise when she topped it off with the enormous hoodie one of the twins had given her last year. It was gray with a pair of bright red and blue cartoon hoodlums on it, and the slogan ‘Mother of all Things’ that always made her smile. But not tonight.

“And that’s the real issue, Mr. Yow. At the heart of it, they all know so much more than me, even that weaselly Waldo. And here I am, supposed to be the Innkeeper, and what happens on my watch? Not only am I incapable of the job, but the book that runs the whole place has disappeared!” She propped her face on her hands, elbows on knees, eyes filled with desperation. “What if I can’t find it? What if I fail? They tested me for magic during the Innkeeper contest, and I guess I did okay, but is there supposed to be another test? I don’t understand anything that’s going on and with Mrs. Haversham not helping and the book missing, I’m bound to fail.”

I jumped up on her lap and sniffed her face, giving her the equivalent of a kitty-kiss before curling up and starting my purr. Cat magic might not be sufficient for Dame Daphne but there was magic in the purr. I could sit on a lap, start my kitty motor, and quick as a cat, take all the misery out of a person.
